    The 2026 Yangtze River Civilization Forum opened on September 15 in Chongqing, gathering scholars, officials and diplomatic representatives from nearly 20 countries — including Egypt, Brazil, India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Australia and Mexico — to explore how the world’s great river civilizations can learn from one another. “Every wave of the Yangtze is a vivid footnote to exchange and mutual learning among civilizations,” CASS President Gao Xiang said at the opening, calling the forum a concrete practice of the Global Civilization Initiative and a useful exploration of different paths to modernization.

Young performers Zhu Shuojing and Ouyang Mingju from the Zhejiang Wu Opera Art Research Institute presented The Heavenly Maiden Scattering Flowers, a classic of the Wu Opera repertoire. Following the performance, guests visited three interactive areas devoted to Wu Opera, traditional craftsmanship and tea culture. Held as part of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, the program supported the goals of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation by creating direct opportunities for cultural exchange and adding local momentum to efforts to build a “Cultural Silk Road.” Jinhua plans to continue exploring new approaches to cultural exchange and working with partners across Africa to strengthen mutual understanding and build lasting connections between communities.
